Smart and Chapman win 2022 Discover Caladesi 10Miler

Picture
Picture
Larry Smart (52) from Dunedin -bib# 956 and Claire Chapman (41) from Tampa (bib# 825) were the overall winners of the 2022 Discover Caladesi 10 Mile race on a chilly morning of Saturday, January 22.  In spite of the low 52 degree temperature, some light rain and a strong NNE wind  they both chose for just a singlet, knowing that running fast would get them warmed up in no time.  A smart move!  Larry finished in 1:05:08 and Claire in 1:07:55 -  There were 314 finishers in the 10-mile race, with start and finish at Pier 60 in Clearwater Beach.

The 5k, which started 15 minutes later,  was an easy job for Justin Babcock (41) from Palm Harbor (bin# 5) He crossed the finishline in 19:35 - First female was Audrey Holtzman (34) from Tampa (bib# 94). She cranked out 22:57 and finished 2 seconds behind Uriah Bullock (13) from Tampa who was 3rd male OA.  There were 289 finishers in the 5k race.

What a great night seeing you all at Sea Dogs Cantina.  It’s been a tough 2020/2021 with limiting our summer series races and no 2020 Turkey Trot.  We thought it was time to get together and for those who agreed, hope you enjoyed it.  Great Mexican food and drinks with catching up with each other.  We also celebrated the lives of Colman, Mary Grace and Tom who passed away this year, they were loyal club members and will be missed.

Sun & Fun at 2021 Tampa Bay Turkey Trot races

A whopping 7.497 runners and walkers had a fantastic time at the 2021 Tampa Bay Turkey Trot in the early hours of Thanksgiving Day in Clearwater.
Roy Hobson from Sarasota crossed the finish line in 15:37 to become the male 5k champion while Jacqueline Brasseale from Evansville (Indiana) was first female in 18:32  Kathy Frailing (54) from Tarpon Springs was 1st female master in 19:37 while Lee Stephens from St Petersburg was the fastest 40+ male runner in 16:30
In the 5K FASTer Way  a total of 4.678 runners crossed the finish on Druid Rd.
The 1 Mile Gobbler, that started at 8:30 was counting for 2.819 runners and walkers to share the road.
They were part of a 42 year old tradition to get out and about near Clearwater High School, a tradition that was interrupted last year by the corona pandemic.

Alan did it again and again and again 43 times.  Proof is in the Quilt!
Let me introduce you to Alan Ranker (70) from Clearwater FL.  He’s the proud owner of all 43 different Turkey Trot shirts.  He also has personally run all of them. Not the 5k but –of course- only the 10k distance.  From the first one in 1979 to the (virtual) one last year (2020) when the biggest race in Pinellas had to be cancelled because of the corona virus.

“I live only 1 mile from the start, so that is always a good warmup on Thanksgiving day,” says Alan who was 28 years old when the first Turkey Trot 10k started – There were 995 runners, who ran a slightly different course than in recent years.

How did he find out about the first Turkey Trot? “Back in the days I was an avid runner and ran a lot of races, among others the Bay to Bay, the  inaugural Skyway Bridge run in 1988, The New York City marathon as well as the Boston marathon, which always started at noon. I was not the fastest runner, but I could shake a leg. But the Turkey Trot became my favorite, something to look out for year after year! “says Alan.

He got blind on one eye caused by an accident. Also suffering from some hearing problems, but still running strong.

Anyway, he had all his shirts combined into one big quilt, which was stitched together by Helen Farog from Tarpon Springs.  As we all can see she did a fantastic job! There are 42 on the front + the extra one for the virtual race last year on the back.    It covers a complete wall in his house on Fairfield Drive in Clearwater.    Composed     massive – unique - and very colorful piece of living running history

Amazing!

WFYRC Track workouts moved to Northside Christian School
We are pleased and grateful to be able to run on a real track again.   Northside Christian School in St. Petersburg has granted us permission to use their fantastic track on Tuesday mornings.  Track (incl very clean bathrooms) will be open at 5:00 am - workout starts at 5:15 am and will end before 7:00 am -

Because of the pandemic our track at Clearwater Highschool  closed in March. Since then we did our speed workouts on the Clearwater causeway which was a nice training opportunity but not as good and fast as on a real and rubberized track.   Since track at Clearwater High is no longer open for adults (only for students) we had to find a new place and after 10 months we are very lucky to be 'on track' again.

The school is located at 7777 62nd Avenue North in St. Petersburg -almost on the border of Pinellas Park and Seminole -   Social distancing and all other corona precautions are mandatory.  Don't forget to bring a mask.  Not neccesary while we run on the track, but everywhere else on school grounds we have to put it up!  Be safe!

Big thanks to Northside Christian!

                Amazing Turkey Trot Family!
At the 2017 Tampa Bay Times Turkey Trot, Cavan Wilson won both the 5k and the 1 mile. His younger brother Colin came in 8th and 2nd. Both were in the front in 2016... as high school athletes this in an inspiring story.

Cavan and Colin come annually at Thanksgiving to visit their Gold Star Grandmother on Indian Rocks Beach. Grandma's kitchen is filled with top finisher mugs as the boys, their dad, mom, aunt and cousin(s) have all participated in the events.

Mom placed in the Grandmasters last year. Grandpa, story is, won the x-country in the '51 Pan Am Games as part of the West Point Pentathlon Team which won a gold medal and was the "trainer" for the '52 Olympic team.

Cavan was a state stand out in cross county and was scholar athlete of the year and outstanding athlete last year from Coral Gables High School. He now runs for UF.

Colin was the over all winner of the Draft Legal USAT National Triathlon Championship last month in Sarasota; he is also the age 16- 19 champ.

The boys will be back this year so keep your eyes on them...  Both are outstanding young men and exceptional high school athletes!

2015 Tampa Bay Times Turkey Trot races attracted 17439 runners, walkers and other creatures who enjoyed a sunny albeit windy start of Thanksgiving day. The event attracted a lot of fast runners-also- from other countries. The 5k was won by 22-year old Carl Dunne from Dunleer, Ireland in 15:39. First 5k female was Kristen Tenaglia (29) from Clearwater in 17:52. Andrew Dimitrakis from Athens, Greece set a new course record in the 1-mile Gobbler. His time: 4:10 Fastest female in the mile was Kristen Courcelle from Colchester, VT in 5:43. Overall winner of the 10K was Chris Trebilcock (27) from Tampa in 33:43 while on the female side Becky Howarth (26) also from Tampa smoked all other women in 17:52.
Our WFYRC track group did very well; in the 5k Wingding Burch Baskett (46) finished in 20:45; Yvonne Bryant (49) ran 23:30 and Kathleen Crowley (56) followed in 23:58, just behind Dawn Taylor (36) who ran 23:56
The 10k Turkey Trot was rerouted a bit because of road-construction. Mile-markers were spot on and volunteers at the waterstops, finishline and in the stadium did a fantastic job. Greg Carro wore his brand new shoes and finished in 40:32 Behind him was Walt Sieg (55) in 40:37 who was followed by Michael Weiss (53) in 40:41 Adam Fahey (17) finished in 42:00 and coach Albert Wieringa (69) cranked out 42:39. Dan Dorsey (50) finished in 44:10 while Kathleen Roach (56) grabbed her mug after finishing in 50:48. Gar Flisek ran all 4 races -better known as 'the Challenge'. Congrats to all of you guys! Your hard work payed off! Race director Skip Rogers did a great job (as usual) and was seen in a flashing black police car with all the trimmings.
